On Tuesday, 29 April 2025, the President of the Competition Council of the Republic of Moldova, Mr. Alexei Gherțescu, participated in the PRIA Competition conference, held in Bucharest and organized by PRIAevents in partnership with the Competition Council of Romania. This event is considered one of the most prominent forums dedicated to competition policy in Romania, annually gathering leaders of competition authorities, legal practitioners, business representatives, and chambers of commerce.
This year’s edition brought to the forefront the major trends in the enforcement of competition rules, with a focus on the latest developments in EU practice regarding the investigation of anti-competitive practices and the assessment of mergers, the adaptation of EU rules to the specific features and challenges of the national market in Romania, as well as the strengthening of the implementation of foreign direct investment screening mechanisms.
Mr. Gherțescu delivered a presentation highlighting the increasing complexity of investigations conducted by the Competition Council of the Republic of Moldova. He also noted the growing involvement of foreign legal advisors in the Council’s cases, reflecting the ongoing alignment of national enforcement practice with EU competition law. Additionally, Mr. Gherțescu emphasized the need to identify tailored national solutions for certain local challenges in cases where EU competition law does not provide clear guidance or solutions.
“The growing complexity of the Competition Council’s investigations and the alignment of our competition policies with European Union standards require us not only to rigorously apply existing EU rules but also to develop tailored solutions to address specific market failures in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Alexei Gherțescu, President of the Competition Council of the Republic of Moldova.
Participation in PRIA Competition 2025 represents a valuable opportunity to strengthen dialogue with our European counterparts and to promote best practices in the enforcement of competition law. In a constantly evolving economic environment, regional cooperation and the exchange of experience are essential to safeguard a well-functioning competitive environment, for the benefit of consumers and the overall economy.
